Update: 18-Jan @ 0200z.........Important: If you worked us on 40M SSB on 14-January between 1109 UTC and 1415 UTC, please work us again, as these QSOs are invalid since we accidentally operated on an unauthorized frequency in this region......keep checking back for further updates.....

Update: 16-Jan @ 2100z........The 6M beacon is set on 50.106 MHz.....any busted calls or corrections will be made AFTER the DXpedition ends.....we are continuing to focus on Europe on all bands.....the % of EU QSOs has increased from 6% to 9% of our total over the last 48 hours......please read this list of guidelines

  1. If you cannot hear us - please don't call us. Wait until conditions favor your QTH.
  2. During SSB pileups, please announce your full call clearly -- ONCE -- using common phonetics.
  3. Please do not add to the QRM by calling out of turn. Be patient.
  4. If we ask for "EU" only or "QRP only" or any other specific request, please QRX. Be patient.

keep checking back for further updates.....

Update: 15-Jan @ 2150z........A band plan has not been published for these reasons: (1) we've already had to shift our operating strategy on every band because of intentional interference, (2) CW-RTTY Skimmers are effectively picking up our signals, (3) the VP8 DXpedition is coming on the air soon with a published band plan which we'll need to circumnavigate in real-time to avoid overlap, and (4) we're trying to self-spot ourselves as much as possible on the most-needed bands.

Update: 15-Jan @ 0020z........We will be on 160m tonight at dusk. The problems have been fixed. We have a SAL30 up as well for RX. The 6m antenna is together and a beacon will be started in a few hours.

Update: 14-Jan @ 2100z........we have up to 4 stations operating 24 hrs/day using 3 SteppIR verticals and one SVDA pointed toward Europe....all antennas are resonant with radials often placed in nearby water.....intermittment problems with the Battle Creek Special have slowed our 160m effort but a fix is in hand.....propagation so close to the Equator is surprisingly challenging.....we're seeing a lot of long path QSOs and weak signals from all parts of the globe.....we all stop the pileups and try working EU anytime there's an opening.....signals vary but are mostly surprisingly weak and fluttery..... over 14,500 QSOs have been uploaded to ClubLog......logs will be uploaded to ClubLog several times a day.........keep checking back for further updates...

Press Release #5

In about a month, the Palmyra Team will be assembling in Hawaii on the first leg of their journey to Palmyra and our excitement is growing!  Palmyra ranks in the top ten of the Most Wanted List and #2 in Europe!

As with major DXpeditions, there has been a change of plans due to unforeseen events. Based on the original award received in January 2015, a Team of 12 operators was assembled.

The air charter is provided by our host, The Nature Conservancy, as part of the award. Earlier this year, the air strip was decertified and as a result the aircraft type had to be changed to allow access to the Palmyra. The aircraft selected will only seat 9 persons, which is a major change of plans for the DXpedition.

Several alternate options were examined but were unsuccessful.  It was with great pain that three of the operators stepped back from the Team to allow the DXpedition to proceed.

All equipment has been received, being pretested and packaged for shipment to Hawaii. The Team plans on leaving Hawaii for Palmyra on 11 January 2016 and being active from 12 January through 25 January.

Future Palmyra Atoll activations may not happen for many years, as access is severely restricted. Permissions to operate on these rare and extremely controlled locations are very difficult to obtain. We wish to thank The Nature Conservancy and the US Fish and Wildlife Service for their cooperation and support. Without this, K5P Palmyra2016 would not occur.

Check the K5P Palmyra2016 web page for future updates, propagation predictions and donation page.

Press Release #4

Call sign for Palmyra 2016 announced!

After many months of planning, securing permits and negotiating contracts with US Fish and Wildlife and the Nature Conservancy, we are quickly approaching the much anticipated DXpedition to Palmyra, KH5-P. The Team is excited to be able to activate this much needed entity. Palmyra ranks in the top ten of the Most Wanted List and #2 in Europe!

Palmyra 2016 call is K5P!

Co-leaders Craig K9CT and Lou N2TU, have formed a very experienced, highly qualified Team of 12 operators and plan to operate five stations over a 14 day period, 11 January through 26 January 2016. Palmyra (KH5) ranks #9 on the Most Wanted List and #2 in Europe.

As with other DXpeditions of this magnitude, this is an expensive adventure. Location, transportation, island costs, and other logistics make Palmyra a costly operation.

Critical to major DXpeditions are the immediate, up-front commitment costs. Before the DXpedition begins, all equipment must be secured, pre-tested, and shipped to Hawaii where it will then be organized for forwarding to Palmyra.

The DX community has been very supportive of this much needed DXCC operation however, we are requesting additional financial support. We have a large payment due on November 1, and are short of our commitments. No matter how large or small the donation, every bit helps. Please do not wait until the operation is completed; most of the expenses are up-front and your support is urgently required now. Future permission to operate on Palmyra Atoll may not happen for many years as access is severely restricted.

Please visit our Palmyra2016 web page to make your donation. http://palmyra2016.org/pages/sponsors.html

Press Release #3

Lou (N2TU) and Craig (K9CT) previously announced a DXpedition to Palmyra Atoll at the International DX Convention in Visalia, California. Palmyra (KH5) ranks #9 on the Most Wanted List and #2 in Europe.

The Pacific Islands DXpedition Group has been awarded permission to activate Cooper Island in the Palmyra Atoll, 11-26, January 2016. In the future, a Callsign will be announced through the normal DX media channels.

One key to the success of activation of a rare entity is a team of pilot stations. These stations gather regional feedback, identify propagation trends and inform the on-island Team of operational issues.

These pilots are well known to the DX community and have either been on DXpeditions or have been pilots on previous high visibility DXpeditions.

• Chief Pilot and Western USA - Rich, KE1B
• Eastern USA & Caribbean - Don, AA1V
• Europe - Col, MMØNDX
• Africa & South America - Andre, V51B
• Asia & Pacific - Hiroo, JA1WSX

Our website, Palmyra2016.org has been updated with photographs and background information of our outstanding Pilot Team.

Additionally, a Palmyra 2016 QSL route has been established. Direct QSLs, with appropriate return postage and envelope, should be sent to:

Palmyra DXpedition
PO Box 73
Elmwood, IL 61529

We urge the DX community to use OQRS via Clublog. This will greatly expedite your QSL!

There is a large payment due shortly and additional funds are needed to meet this obligation. Your donations are required to support the effort to activate this rare entity.

Please visit Palmyra2016.org for the latest news, Team photos, and a list of our generous individual, Foundation and Equipment sponsors.

Thank you for your support.

Press Release #2

Lou (N2TU) and Craig (K9CT) previously announced a DXpedition to Palmyra Atoll at the International DX Convention in Visalia, California.  Palmyra (KH5) ranks #9 on the Most Wanted List and #2 in Europe.

The Pacific Islands DXpedition Group has been awarded permission to activate Cooper Island in the Palmyra Atoll, 11-26, January 2016.

A team of 12 highly experienced operators and veterans of many DXpeditions has been assembled. Team members include Craig K9CT, Lou N2TU, Jerry WB9Z, Tom ND2T, Mike K9NW, Ralph KØIR, John K6MM, Bob K4UEE, Hal W8HC, Dick W3OA, Jim N9TK, and Glenn WØGJ.

The Team plans to operate five stations, 160 to 6 meters on CW, SSB and Digital modes, using a call sign to be announced at a later date. Antennas dedicated to working Europe will be deployed due to the high need and propagation path difficulty.

Critical to major DXpeditions are the immediate, up-front commitment costs. For instance, most of the equipment (antennas, coax, wire, connectors, and site material) has already been purchased, tested and shipped to Palmyra.  These procurement and shipping costs are a significant portion of the overall DXpedition costs.  It is estimated this DXpedition will incur costs of over $200,000 USD plus individual and personal expenses.

We are pleased we have received support from so many Foundations, Clubs and Individuals already.  We are about $30,000 USD short of our need for the next payment November 1st.  Therefore, please donate as soon as possible to help with the upfront costs

Our website, Palmyra2016.org, has a “Donate” link to facilitate your generous contribution.  Without your support, this DXpedition would not happen!

Thank you for your support.
